Wednesday 19th September

Having just set up a group blog for our first research project on the Farnham MA, (The Havanas 2007) I am about to go and take photos from around the college and town to aid our research. Very new all this blogging but I am getting the hang of it and it is really quite good fun!

I have had so many thoughts for ideas as to what to research during the MA so far - I have thought about masks - the rituals and spirituality surrounding them - literal and metaphorical masks...I looked into Japanese Noh theatre masks and the way expressions change depending on how the wearer holds their body. I have looked into myths and legends for inspiration. I have done some research into facial expressions.

Recently I have been looking at the human condition and how this could be explored or presented in clay. I am very interested in Daisy Boman's clay figures. Daisy Boman lived in South Africa and was influenced by Apartheid. Her figures are all the same colour indicating colour should not matter, their heads are square and without faces representing the fact that the figures are de-humanised and forced to conform to the rigid constraints of society and crudely modelled showing mankind in its most basic, primitive form. The figures are all climbing and piling one on top of the other, seeming to struggle to reach a higher place/overcome adversity. It speaks to me about struggle of life and human stoicism.

I have looked into bronze casting of my work and had a great chat today with John Joyce who is setting up the new forge at the college - we had a great chat about how work could be cast there. He suggested it is best to bring a wax version of the piece first to speed up the process - ie. make the piece in clay, create a mould of it, cast a wax version and from this a bronze could be made. I let John know that I would be very interested in any courses that may be run in learning about how the process works so hopefully it will be possible to attend something like this.

I also had a great chat with Mandy in the 3rd year on the BA in Ceramics who is also doing portrait sculpture - we both said it was great having someone else on the course interested in the same thing. Mandy was so helpful, lent me a great book and gave me her file with information on other portrait sculptors so all of that is so helpful.

I am meeting Darren Swanborough tomorrow to chat about portrait sculpture so I'm really looking forward to that! More update tomorrow!

Hey Ellie--

It's Mel from Stirrup Queens. I'm not sure if the white circle was a blockage, but I can send you some stuff on what happens next if it was (usually, if the dye can get through, it means the tubes are clear or have been cleared by the force of the dye). You can email me at thetowncriers@gmail.com.
